“It’s all Folk Music - I ain’t never heard a horse sing!” (Louis
Way back in 1968, Alan packed his guitar and his few possessions into the boot of his old Ford Consul and set off from his parents’ home in Clacton in search of fame and fortune in London. He had been in the habit of driving up to the city most weekends to go to folk clubs including the Troubadour, Les Cousins and Bunjies and decided to cut down on the travelling!
Within a few months he was established as a resident at the Tuesday night sessions at the Troubadour, sharing the bill with, among others, Paul McNeill, Linda Peters (later Linda Thompson) and Alex Norton (now better known as an actor in “Braveheart”, “Taggart” and numerous other roles). He also occasionally acted as roadie for a number of the folk singers around in the late 60s and early 70s, including Paul and Linda, Jim McCann, Redd Sullivan and Alex Campbell.
In 1969 he met his wife, Elizabeth and, on their marriage in 1971, they moved out to the East Herts/West Essex border. By this time Alan had built a reputation as a singer and instrumentalist with a wide repertoire of songs and tunes ancient and modern. Although never a full-time performer, he has appeared in clubs, concerts, festivals and other venues in the UK and in Europe, including lunchtime concerts on the South Bank and has also made a number of radio appearances. He has also been active in organising Folk Clubs and sessions for many years. He has now retired to his roots in the Colne Delta!
His repertoire includes not only songs that fall into the general category of traditional and contemporary folk songs, but also an eclectic mix of songs from other genres that work with an acoustic guitar accompaniment. He can tailor his material to suit any audience, from a primary school music group to a retirement home. So whether you are booking for a folk club, concert or festival, a live music pub, a restaurant or whatever, Alan Francis has to be worthy of your consideration.
